The Seabelle Captain is more than a title; she is a living symbol of our club’s history, community, and enduring spirit.

The Seabelle Captain

In the world of yacht clubs, many traditions are shared, but some are uniquely their own. At the Key Biscayne Yacht Club, a cherished and distinctive position is that of the Seabelle Captain. It's a role that has been an integral part of our community since 1955, and it’s a story rooted in the club’s earliest days.

The Seabelle Captain's position began in a time before the official clubhouse was built. In those pioneering years, the ladies of the club took it upon themselves to organize and celebrate events, laying the social foundation for the community we know today. This tradition of leadership and hospitality lives on.

Today, the Seabelle Captain is a social leader, chosen annually by the Commodore to work closely with club management. She is the face of the club for the year, helping to set the tone and curate a full calendar of diverse events. This isn't a role of mere ceremony; it's a dynamic partnership that shapes the social fabric of the club, many of whose events are listed on our Traditions page.

The legacy of these leaders is permanently honored within the clubhouse. In the Seabelle Room, located on the main floor, three plaques proudly display the names of every Seabelle Captain since the role’s inception. This collection serves as a powerful reminder of the women who have shaped our club's history and social life.

The recognition of the Seabelle Captain is woven into the very fabric of our club life. When she is seated at a table, it is marked by a small flag with a bell, a subtle but significant nod to her position. This distinction is a sign of respect, a tradition that honors her contributions and leadership.

The role's significance is most visible during our time-honored flag-lowering ceremonies. In addition to the current flag and squadron, past Seabelle Captains, along with past Commodores, line up on the seawall in uniform. This impressive lineup reminds us that this is not a one-year title but a lifelong honor, connecting generations of leaders who have shaped the Key Biscayne Yacht Club.
