Kevin Burnham, hand on heart during the U.S. national anthem, at the 2004 Athens Olympics alongside Paul Foerster. Victory at last!

This plaque honors Kevin Burnham and Paul Foerster, gold medalists in the Men’s 470 Class at the 2004 Athens Olympics. After decades of dedication and prior Olympic heartbreak, Burnham realized his dream at age 47—becoming the oldest U.S. sailor ever to win gold. With Paul Foerster’s calm tactical brilliance and Burnham’s boundless passion, they dominated the waters of Agios Kosmas to capture the gold for Team USA.
The Key Biscayne Yacht Club takes deep pride in having supported Kevin’s Olympic journey. His triumphant moment in Athens is memorialized here not only as a sporting achievement, but as a symbol of perseverance, loyalty, and leadership. A longtime Honorary Member of KBYC, Kevin contributed to the Club as a sailor, a mentor, and an inspiration until his passing in 2020.
This trophy reminds us all—dreams, like sailors, are buoyed by community, discipline, and a never-give-up spirit.
