The Mosaic Compass Rose is more than just a beautiful landmark within the Key Biscayne Yacht Club property; it is the ceremonial center of club life. Positioned at the foot of the flagpole, this intricate work of art serves as the location where all formal flag lowerings and major events take place.
A Vision Preserved
The design of the mosaic is rooted in the history of the club’s first employee, Dockmaster Norman Riddle. It began as a simple, hand-painted compass rose that Norman created in the parking lot to help guide the early members. In the 1970s, the club's board and a dedicated committee recognized the importance of preserving Norman's original vision. The club made a significant investment of $4,500 at the time, to have Norman’s design professionally rendered into the permanent tile mosaic that stands today.
The Legend and the Lore
Encircling the stunning blue and gold tilework is a powerful inscription that captures the respect and humility required of every mariner:
"The Sea Loves Those Only Who Fear Her."
This quote is widely attributed to Joseph Conrad, the famed maritime novelist known for masterpieces like Heart of Darkness and Lord of the Jim. Conrad often explored the psychological toll of the sea, and this specific sentiment reflects the sailor’s eternal truth: to love the ocean is to respect its immense and unpredictable power.
